Is your garden, well, just a patch of grass with a fence around it? While it’s certainly great to have your own outdoor space for parties or to simply relax in, it could be so much more. If you’ve got the makings of a green thumb or just want some fun outdoor DIY projects with sunshine and fresh air, then we’ve got some awesome tasks for your garden.

Many of the items are things that you may already have laying around in your home or garden, or at least easy to pick up from somewhere for free. Take a look at these ideas and see which ones you like the sound of for your garden. Several of these projects can be done on the weekend and don’t take long to complete, plus, they’ll look amazing.

#1 Build a Herb Garden

You don’t need to buy herbs if you can grow them yourself! Some of the most popular herbs to grow are the likes of basil, oregano, sage, mint, rosemary, and thyme. These taste great in loads of meals and are full of health benefits.

One idea is to put together a large wooden box with no lid, say around two meters long, 50cm wide, and 45cm deep. Then, create dividers so that you’ve essentially got four to five mini boxes inside one bigger box. Next, fill each box with high-grade soil, buy the herbs as seeds and then place these in their own box.

After planting, you’ll need about 5cm of water each week for the herbs, but once they start growing and sprouting the edible leaves, remove these as and when you need them for your meals! Remember basic gardening tips and you’ll be fine.

#2 Playground or Obstacle Course

It’s true that all kids love playgrounds and fun obstacle courses, but as they grow older, they often get bored with the item you spent a lot of money on! How about you create your own DIY playground to avoid wasting cash?

One possibility is using old tires. Just like these great ideas, repurposing old tires for swing sets or to jump around on will help you save money. Plus, there are always so many to pick up from mechanics for free or even on eBay. Tires are so versatile (or should we say “versatire”) that the possibilities are endless. You can even hang them from a pole and the kids can jump from one to the next like on Ninja Warrior.

Another option is a V-shaped climbing frame made from planks of wood. Kids enjoy climbing anything, so a big, colorful frame will look like the coolest item in the world. You could paint the planks of wood and arrange them a bit like a bed frame, with small spaces in between. You can even attach a few large stones for their hands to grab, similar to what you might find in an indoor rock climbing gym.

#3 Bird Paradise

There’s no better way to get the feel of nature than by watching birds in your own garden. You can make a little paradise for your feathered friends by setting up a zone just for them. You’ll need a birdbath, and these can be bought or made at home. You can simply screw a metal bowl onto a tree stump, for example, and you’ve got yourself a DIY birdbath.

Afterward is the bird feeder. There’s an awesome DIY idea here for a bird feeder made from just an empty two-liter plastic bottle. Once this is set up next to the birdbath, you’ll simply have to check the water is clean and filled up, as well as ensuring that the feeder is stocked up with nuts and seeds but isn’t being used by rodents instead of birds!

Those are just some suggestions for how you can spend more time in the garden working on outdoor DIY projects. Get the family involved and ask them what ideas they would like, so that you’re creating things that everyone will enjoy and use.
