If you are interested in interior designing but you don’t have the degree or experience, starting a home decorations business is a great choice. You can be part of the interior designing world and not have to get the schooling that is required.

The difference between the two is always up for debate. To clear up the issue an interior designer will have a part in all the aspects of a home. From the planning stage all the way from building, or remodeling, to setting the last piece of furniture in a room. An interior decorator deals with the aesthetics of the planning. In other words, they bring the decorations in, such as statues or plants, that make the house homier. The final touches, you could say.

There are a few steps that you should do before starting your home décor business. Decide if you are going to work in your home, or if you are going to rent or buy an office. If you are planning to sell from home or go out and do on-site visits. What types of aesthetic items do you plan to use, and what limits will you set. You need to have these questions, and more, answered.

Plan

Having a business plan is the first step in starting any business. Sit down and make a one-year plan, or longer. Detail everything that relates to your business. If you are unsure how to do this you can find numerous sources online, or in person, that can help you. If you plan on getting a business loan this will be a requirement. After it is done, follow the steps you outlined. Add onto it as you go.

Merchandise

You need to have some type of wholesale company that you work with to get your items. They can either drop ship the items to your customers, or they can ship them directly to you. There also may be some franchise opportunities in your area if you would rather work with an established name and company.

There is usually a substantial fee to be able to work with another company so if that is your choice then be prepared. Either way, do your research. Check the company out and make sure that they have good reviews and high-quality products. Your business depends upon the items that you sell to make you successful. Make sure that they are up to your standards, or higher.

Insurance

Business insurance is one of the most important things that you can have. It is not only a legal requirement, but it is a personal risk solution. During business, if something gets done wrong, or something breaks while setting up or delivering, your insurance will cover the costs. If someone gets hurt, or you get hurt, the insurance will pay the bills. Make sure you get an insurance policy that will fit your needs and then go one level higher to make sure you are covered.

Licenses and Permits

Every area, and town, will have specific requirements for you to run a business. Whether from home or office, you will need to get all the proper licenses and permits before starting any type of business.

Once you have completed those four steps you are ready to get into the world of running your own business. A home décor company is a smart way to move towards having the freedom of working your own business, and making money for yourself, rather than working for a big corporation.
