A gaming room is a great idea whether you have kids or not. It is the perfect space to get active when the weather is acting up outside, a space to bond with the family, to get creative and try out some home decor crafts or just a space to spend some time when you are bored or need to kill some time. Whether you are converting a new basement or touching up the one you already have, here are some tips to help you get the basement gaming room of your dreams.

#1 Assess Moisture and Temperature Control

The first thing you need to do is ensure that the gaming room is comfortable. While this does not mean that you need to finish the basement gaming room before you start using it, it means that it must be warm enough for anyone who would like to use it. With no major damp issues, a dehumidifier and space heater might be enough to keep things cozy.

For any leaks, flooding or dampness issues, you need to sort these out before you do anything else. Most basement leaks can be fixed by a contractor. Adding insulation is also a great way to keep the basement warm without increasing your energy bills too much.

#2 Add Soundproofing

Your gaming room might get very loud when things get a bit competitive and heated. Adding soundproofing is a great way to ensure the noise does not bother your neighbours or someone who might be using the rest of the house. Soundproofing is also a great way of improving the sound in the gaming room and getting the most out of your sound equipment. Using insulating foam or drywall is a good start, but you can also add thick carpets and curtains to absorb noise.

#3 Do the Wiring

You will need extra electrical outlets for the lamps, TVs, computers, monitors and consoles you might add to the gaming room. You can get a contractor to install the new wiring to ensure it is done right. To make things look better, ask them to hide the wires under the carpets and furniture, and the outlets behind shelves. Ensure that you do not run cables and wires where someone can trip on them because that puts both the people using the room and its equipment at risk.

#4 Get the Right Equipment

A gaming room is not complete without the equipment you need and its accompanying software. If you are into online gaming, start with a dedicated wireless router to connect to any mobile devices you may use to game on your smartphone. The router should also allow for wired internet access for your TVs, computer and consoles, as a wired connection is more reliable and has a higher speed than a wireless network in most cases.

#5 Make the Space Comfortable

Once you have the basics arranged, you can move on to improving the basement’s comfort. This can include finishing the floors if you are working with a concrete floor and painting it to make it look nicer. You can also have the walls finished or cover them in drywall sheets or curtains. Atmospheric mood lighting can make a huge difference and you can purchase some dimmable mood lights to create the right mood depending on the games you play and how you want the gaming room to look and feel.

Designing a basement gaming room is a fun project that can be completed depending on what you need the space for. Remember that a family’s gaming room is different from one where you will spend time playing with friends and so their designs will be different. Once you have the essentials down, all other design options are subjective.
