All About Tiles

Tiles are robust, durable, water-resistant, and hard to chip or stain. They also don’t absorb odor or bacteria. With a wealth of colors, materials, and patterns available, it’s hard not to find something you like. As design versatility goes, it’s hard to beat, and shouldn’t be confined to the kitchen or bathroom only. Tiles are also:

  • Eas to clean: A mop, a bucket, and some tile cleaner is all you need. There’s no worry about soaking the floor, and no need for specialist tools.
  • Simple to repair and maintain: It’s easy to camouflage a small crack or chip. If a tile needs replacement, you can rip out and replace a small section without needing to tear up the whole floor
  • Cool to the touch: In hot climates, tile is one of the coolest floor types (alongside polished cement) to help keep your home a pleasant temperature without incurring costs.

Changing out your flooring is one of the easiest ways to refresh and update a home. While it isn’t a cheap home improvement task, it yields a lot of visual difference for relatively little investment.

Types of Tiles

Not all tiles are created equal. It’s more difficult to change out a tile floor than it is a carpet, so you want to make sure you choose the right type to complement the room and your lifestyle. Typically, it’s a good idea to go with timeless colors that can weather a few rounds of redecoration, although that’s purely personal.

Ceramic tile is the most common type, and very affordable. Glazed ceramic tiles are hard-wearing, come in a huge range of colors and styles, and can be used nearly everywhere, on walls and floors.

Porcelain tile is finer and harder than ceramic tile, meaning it can be difficult to work with for installation. You will need diamond-tipped tools to do so. However, it’s immensely tough, and great for heavy-traffic areas. It also can mimic wood, marble, bricks, and many other finishes.

Glass tiles are mostly used  on walls, as splashbacks, or as shower accents. It chips and cracks easily, but is near impossible to stain.

Marble, Granite, and Stone tiles are eye-catching and luxurious. As a natural stone, you can get a wide range of colours, but are limited to the specific look of the type of stone used. Granite is sturdy, doesn’t chip easily, and is often used on countertops. Marble can hold stains and will need sealant. Stone is great for outside tile applications.

What are the best floorboard tiles? That’s up to your home and the room. Each of these makes a fantastic choice in the right setting. Overall, it’s hard to go wrong with tile if you choose appropriate tiles for the room and use a good installer.  Many homes find it an easy, safe, and durable way to stay timelessly stylish.
