How to Decorate Your Front Porch for Winter

Decorating your front porch for winter might not seem important.  After all, if the weather is cold in your area you aren’t using it and it may even be surrounded by a foot of snow. But keeping your front porch decorated even in the colder months is the perfect way to keep up your home’s curb appeal, which is essential if you are considering selling your home this winter. Here are several tips to decorate your front porch in the winter season.

The key to making your front porch attractive is to keep your front door polished. If your door needs some repainting, take the time to touch it up. A freshly painted door can attract a lot of attention to your front porch (a plus especially if you are trying to sell your home.) Next, add new hardware if needed.  Finally, add a classic wreath for a bit of extra color.

Most people think of window boxes as a spring or summer addition to their home. But you can still dress up your front porch with winter friendly window boxes. Add evergreen boughs, pinecones, and branches for an easy to care for winter touch. Add even more flare with string lights.

Nothing brightens up a front porch more than a few well placed garden containers. Outdoor containers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors which means you can easily find one to fit the style and color of your home. Fill your containers with plants that will survive the winter and add color. Choose small evergreen bushes, hydrangeas, or ivy to fill your container.

If your home is located in an area where the temperature drops below freezing or the ground is covered in snow you may not get much use out of your front porch furniture. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use it as a decorative feature. Add a throw blanket across the back of an adirondack chair for an added inviting touch.

Winter days are shorter and the nights are longer, which means our outdoor lights need to work overtime to really illuminate the front porch. Adding a few solar powered outdoor lights to your front porch will illuminate your decorations on the darkest of nights. Begin with ground lights, such as solar powered pathway lights and landscaping lights to create an inviting glow. Next, add a layer of lights around the outer edges of your front porch. Hanging solar powered lanterns or outdoor string lights are very popular among homebuyers as they can be placed wherever you want and do not require electricity. Finally, invest in an overhead front porch light or doorway lights. Both of these types of lights will be your main source of illumination. You will need an electrician to help with the installation.

Keep your front porch decorations classic and simple. Too many decorations can take away from the beauty of your home. Utilize the beauty of winter and appeal to all five sense to really create an inviting scene. Just a few small touches of greenery, furniture, and lighting will really increase your home’s curb appeal and make your front porch stand out.
