Do Florals Really Work in Interior Design?

Anyone familiar with home design will know the amount of new trends that crop up every year. Sometimes they’re impossible to keep up with. Bold hues, statement stones, organic curves, granny chic. The interior design world is a whirlwind of new ideas and intense creativity. But having that said, there is one trend that has remained in place for decades. The floral trend.

Originating in the 1950s, this trend has found its way into numerous households over the years, with some going all out with floral wallpaper and furniture and some going for the more subtle look – curtains, throws, table runners. But there is a bit of a stigma surrounding this one. Because of its early conceptualisation, there are some who attribute this trend to slightly older households, with parents and grandparents persevering with the 50s style even though the world has moved on. So are they right? Is the floral design really outdated?

In our opinion, the reason that the floral design has lasted so long is that it can’t be outdated. This is a timeless trend that can work in any household – provided it is done with care and delicacy. The reason florals work is because they’re not really one color or one statement. In other words, you can have a design within the design, choosing the patterns and colors that work for you. Not only this, but flowers have a positive effect on your mood and are known to bring freshness to households.

As mentioned previously, there are a number of ways people style a floral design in their homes. One of the most common is through wall art – images that use flowers as the central theme and work to add some color to the home. Sometimes, however, if you want to go for a trend, you don’t want to do things subtly. If you want to go for the more “complete” floral look, then we would suggest you go for real florals over floral patterned wallpaper or furniture. If you’re going for the floral design trend – or any trend for that matter – the important thing is to do it your way and don’t try too hard to replicate others.
