Few things are more important than proper slumber. Poor sleep quality is synonymous with poor job performance, waning concentration and a host of mental health issues. As such, if your sleep quality has diminished, your bedroom décor choices may be to blame. While some bedroom décor is highly conducive to enhanced slumber, certain furnishings stand to negatively impact your nightly respite.

Fortunately, sleep-enhancing décor is easy to come by and affordable on virtually any budget. If a relaxing – and well-furnished – sleeping space is what you’re after, consider the following bedroom furnishings.

Relaxing Bedroom Decor

Luxury Mattresses

If your current mattress isn’t providing the comfort you require, kick it to the curb. Proper sleep is too important for you to be wasting time with a mattress that can’t accommodate your unique needs. In your search for the ideal bed, consider purchasing a sustainable mattress. While it’s true that a good mattress is no small investment, it’s impossible to put a price tag on years of first-rate slumber.

Large Bedside Tables

Few things are more frustrating than continuously getting up in the middle of the night. In addition to being cumbersome, repeatedly rising during the overnight hours can dramatically impact your overall quality of slumber, particularly if you’re someone who has trouble falling back asleep.

Fortunately, there are a number of easy ways to turn this type of sleep interruption into a rare occurrence. For starters, make a point of using the bathroom right before bed. Although everyone has to answer the call of nature in the middle of the night at some point, relieving yourself in advance of falling asleep can make nighttime visits to the washroom few and far between. Additionally, if possible, try to avoid drinking large amounts of fluid in the leadup to bedtime.

When it comes to interruptions that don’t involve the call of nature, a large bedside is liable to prove useful. Aside from using the bathroom, people often get up at night for pills, snacks and water. So, if there are certain items you frequently find yourself getting out of bed to retrieve, invest in a bedside table that’s large enough to comfortably house all the items you need access to overnight. If you have to get out of bed to retrieve them, falling back asleep is liable to prove more difficult than it would if you had access to the items in question.

Light-Blocking Window Dressings

Many of us can only sleep well in complete darkness. However, if your bedroom is an area that receives a significant amount of sunlight, the early morning hours are likely to create problems with your sleep schedule. Additionally, if you live in an area with a fair amount of artificial light from street-lamps or passing vehicles, light may even be a problem throughout the overnight hours.

Anyone looking to nip this in the bud should outfit their windows with light-blocking screens or blackout curtains. Most light-blocking screens won’t cost you more than $20 and can be easily attached to your bedroom windows. Since many of these screens are of the stick-on variety, installation shouldn’t cause you any headaches. However, while screens are certainly among the most cost-effective options, they do become less effective as they wear down over time. Furthermore, once stick-on screens are removed, they generally can’t be reattached.

If you’re open to a slightly costlier – but more cost-effective – option, look into blackout curtains. As the name suggests, these curtains are thicker than traditional curtains and more adept at blocking outside light. Lest you be concerned about them meshing with the rest of your décor, blackout curtains are available in an extensive variety of colors and patterns.

It is impossible to overstate the importance of a good night’s sleep. Without proper sleep, you’re liable to encounter trouble in many areas of your life. Furthermore, lack of sleep has been linked to decreased immunity, negative mindset and poor mental health. Given how crucial sleep is to proper functionality, enhancing the quality of your slumber should be high atop your list of priorities. To start with, you’ll need to take a look at your bedroom and make note of any deficiencies in your sleeping space. If you find that your furnishings are less-than-conducive to a peaceful night’s rest, consider the décor options discussed above.
