It’s not often that contemporary design can blend with country style and exist cohesively. The two are on the opposite ends of the design spectrum and don’t really have common features. But The Mill House is a rare exception where a modern country style home is found clothed in a country exterior.

Located in the mountains of Sweden, just outside the city of Malmo, the gorgeous home sits nestled away in the trees. Wingårdh Arkitektkontor were tasked with the challenge of taking an old farm property and redesigning it as a family vacation home.

The farm conversion consisted of a hayloft, stables, cowshed, and a big barn. Inside the main house we find a minimalist interior with ultra-modern features such as the bold lines and simple textures we often see with this style.

However, the starkness of it all is softened by the use of light oak wood and limestone in the finishing. The majority of the interior is completed with the light oak and can be found throughout in the furniture, cabinetry, and ceiling beams. A touch of stainless steel peeks through in the modest kitchen.

From the exterior, it appears that the 50 m2 (538 ft2) main living quarters is nothing more than a modern country style cottage. But the floor to ceiling windows open up the interior to the breathtaking world outside. A natural water source flows down from the mountain and pools in a manmade pond just outside, near the patio. A sauna is attached to the house so guests can steam and then swim, a popular Swedish ritual in the area.

All in all, The Mill House is a stunning work of craftsmanship and modern innovation that’s sure to be the ultimate getaway spot for years to come with this family.
